I love an autumnal adventure as much as the next person (okay, probably more than the next person) but if someone asks me to hang out during the autumn months, I’m always inclined to suggest a movie night. For some, this may seem boring but maybe they’ve just never had a movie night with me! I like to plug in all the fairy lights, light a cozy candle, dig out some snacks to share and fill the room with blankets and pillows for max comfort. I do a movie night RIGHT, ya know? This weekend I went to my local used book/movie store to pick out some autumnal classics to watch over the weekend, and I was inspired to write this post! So here are 8 of my favorite cozy films for the perfect fall movie night.
Practical Magic
One of my top movies of all time! So 90s! Sandra Bullock is my fave romantic movie lead and she does not disappoint in this film. And I’m always blown away when someone I consider a close friend hasn’t seen this movie because it is that! good!
When Harry Met Sally
We can all agree that this movie would not be made today (hi, sexist themes and a binary understanding of gender!) but DAMN it is some cozy autumnal romantic shit and I still watch it with a fond heart. Who doesn’t love an enemies-to friends-to maybe lovers plot? I SURE DO.
Hocus Pocus
I mean this one is obvious but when was the last time you actually sat down and watched this iconic film? Most of it was filmed on location in Salem, MA and every scene is filled with magic, leaves bursting with colors, and that sweet 90s nostalgia. I’m a millennial, sue me! I love the 90s!!
Mystic Pizza
Nothing can complete with Autumn in New England, and this heartwarming coming of age story starring a young Julia Roberts (with ridiculously BEAUTIFUL 80s mane) hits all the sweet spots for me.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Many will argue that Prisoner of Azkaban is the coziest HP movie just because there is ONE scene where the crew hides behind pumpkins. NAH. Nothing compares to the magic of the first film before it gets too dark, and there are floating jack-o-lanterns above the Great Hall…hmm maybe there’s a Pinterest tutorial for that…
Halloweentown
It always surprises me when people haven’t heard of Halloweentown but if you weren’t brought up in the golden age of DCOMs, I understand. You can get both the first and second of this series on DVD and binge them both in one, cozy night! If you can’t get enough Halloweentown, you can visit St. Helens, Oregon in October, where they filmed the movies and hold a festival to celebrate every year!
Casper
I recently gave this a long overdue rewatch and the memories came flooding back! How is Christina Ricci real? Why are some ghosts blobby and some look like cartoon versions of their human selves?! I left with many questions but also the cozy feeling that only a forgotten childhood fave can give you.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Wow, a movie that was made this decade! I’m a hard sell when it comes to romance films, but Netflix hit it out of the park with this one. My besties will complain that they tweaked some key things from the books, but I will say that this is one of the few movies I watched twice in the same week because it just gave me those thrilling first-love butterflies. And I can’t wait for the next in the series!
Well these are my top cozy films! Is your fave film missing from this list? Let me know in the comments!
Stay spooky!
