Maggie McGill’s ebook, Weightless, was a personal account of their own journey with their relationship to movement, shared in a way that was validating to my own journey, with deep insight and advice that I’m actually in the middle of journaling about right now. Maggie is coming from a place of love and care for themself, and for their readers, and it is deeply appreciated.

From the first page, this book really resonated with me. The initial few chapters helped me put into perspective how far I’ve already come with healing my relationship with exercise/movement, and also made me reflect on some of the decisions I made that are actually really similar to things the author did. I enjoyed the journal prompts along the way, I filled them in with sticky notes so I could preserve the pages I printed the book onto. Because I have already started my journey, and recently have been trying to increase my activity level, the chapters on looking towards the future really spoke to me- I really loved the idea of looking back and remembering when you typically have a busy time, so you’re aware that you may need to be a bit more gentle with yourself or adjust expectations the next time that happens. I found the author outlining their own ebbs and flows in movement really helpful, because being reminded that I can always return to habits and hobbies, even if it’s been days, weeks, or years, has aided in the sustainability of said habits in other areas of my life. I’m sure the same principle will help me as I continue to incorporate movement into my life.
For me, it was a fairly quick read, though I can see returning to certain passages or taking a longer time on the journal prompts. Others might enjoy processing things more slowly the first time around, especially if they’re less familiar with the non-diet approach to exercise. I also love the resources at the end! Admittedly, I knew of quite a few of the creators and books, but I’m eager to check out the others. I’m very lucky to have won this book and had the chance to read it. I would recommend this to people who are looking for a new way to conceptualize exercise, one that accepts them as they are and encourages self-compassion above all else.

I absolutely loved Weightless. It covered so many of the struggles that people living in bigger bodies face when it comes to confidence and joy. The stories and tips inside were not only helpful but felt achievable too. Reading it and seeing Maggie’s own journey made me feel better right away, and the book left me feeling so powerful.

I haven’t had time to fully slow down, focus and take in every word but I’ve read bits and pieces here and there and I am LOVING it so far!
The journal prompts are really thoughtful and thought provoking. They feel like they will help me dive deeper than surface level to get to the root of my trauma around movement.
Trauma around movement has actually been a big issue for me the past year or so that I have been trying to dissect. I think it has always been there but I’ve been doing some shadow work and actually looking straight at this particular trauma and I’m feeling all of the triggers! So this couldn’t have come at a better time for me.
Reading it makes me feel like I’m not alone and that someone actually understands EXACTLY how I feel, to the point that I’m being helped to realize how I actually feel about movement and my body right now.
Thank you for putting in all the effort to help us face our movement demons so that we can be care-free and joyful as we get out there and reap the benefits of movement!

I loved your book weightless! It really helped me change my views on movement, it even helped me start calling it movement (at least in my head). It also resonated with me because it made me think about why I hate the word exercise and even thinking about doing it is daunting (hello unresolved fat kid in gym class issues!). Now I look at any movement I do as a positive (even if it isn’t designated “work out” time) which is helpful since I have such a busy life right now (I work full time and am taking grad school classes) I look forward to going back and reading this book again, especially once I have some more time to designate to movement and use the resources you recommended to start moving my body in a more direct way.
This book and your Instagram account have helped me start to embrace and love my body the way it is right now. Instead of waiting until it’s what society deems as “worthy.”
