I love a seasonal recipe. Hell, I love seasons! Celebrating Autumn is top of the list, but I enjoy making the most out of any time of year because literally any day can be made special if you want it to be. It’s barbecue season now, and the grills are firing up! Summer always makes me think of my favorite movies to watch, especially when I was a kid, and Disney Channel Original Movies were my favorites because they aired a new one every month! When I think of summer, I also think of hot dogs. And if you’ve ready the title of this post, you probably know what’s coming…EDDIE DOGS!
If you’re around my age, you know exactly what I’m talking about. If you feel clueless, it’s okay! Here’s the deets: Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook-Off was a DCOM that centered around Eddie, a high school boy who was torn between baseball and cooking. Bobby Flay shows up at the end, it’s pretty rad. Anyway at the beginning of the movie he makes these STACKED hot dogs for himself and his best friends, aka EDDIE DOGS. I studied the movie long and hard to make sure I got every detail correct for this recipe. So celebrate summer with Eddie Dogs, the perfect hot dog recipe to delight any and all guests!
The Recipe
Serves 4
Ingredients
8 hot dogs, long length
8 buns
Ketchup
Mustard
Relish
12 cherry tomatoes, halved
1 white onion, sauteed
3 jalapeno peppers, sliced and cleaned, depending on preference
1/4 cup horseradish
1 small can of sauerkraut, well drained
Directions
- Cook hot dogs as directed
- Place securely into buns
- Drizzle ketchup and mustard over hot dog, making sure to extend to the side of the bun
- Spoon or squirt relish along the hot dog
- Place sauteed onions along the hot dog
- Pretend you’re a basketball star. Toss generous amounts of sauerkraut from a foot away onto your hot dog. This might be a fun time to grab your kids. This might also be a good activity for outside. This is an important step, as the air creates volume on your hot dog.
- Gently spoon on horseradish, using your own judgement.
- Place 3 tomato halves along your dog. Squirt a tiny spot of mustard on top of each one.
- Sprinkle with a few jalapeno slices for heat.
- Open wide and dig in!
Sure, you could call this more of an assembly than a recipe. But if you’re hosting your millennial friends for a backyard gig, they will be SO pleased to be able to create their very own Eddie Dogs.
