It’s no secret that I love seasonal decor, but I also pride myself on being a budget babe. In the three years since living on my own, I’ve accumulated a few tricks up my sleeve that make decorating an apartment for any season easy, fun, and affordable. Here are 5 tips to decorate your apartment on a tight budget!
1. Choose Your Decor Hot Spots
Decorating an entire apartment can feel overwhelming, so I like to pick a few nooks and crannies where decor will really shine. For me, those places are my bedroom, my coffee nook in the kitchen, and my credenza! Decorating above my bed leads to great selfies, the coffee nook is super cozy, and the credenza welcomes my guests because it’s the first thing they see when they enter my apartment.
2. Use Banners and Bunting
I live in a big apartment and there is a lot of wall space to cover. Banners have become my new best friend! I stretch them over long pieces of furniture, hang them from my TV stand, and even throw some up in the kitchen. They’re also super affordable and if you buy banners made with sturdy materials, they will last you a lifetime.
3. Get Creative
Now don’t go Pinterest-ing your whole home because that can take ages. But there are simple crafts you can do that will save you a buck here and there. Last year I found wooden appliques in the Target dollar section, nailed a little hole through the top, strung them with embroidery thread and voila! Tree ornaments. You can also string together felt shapes or pompoms and DIY your own bunting. Lots of options here if you have the free time!
4. Mugs and Candles are Cozy Gold
I’m a big of a mug and candle collector because I truly believe they are the coziest items out there. Mugs are great for drinking (and I love to keep them seasonal) but they’re also lovely for holding pens, kitchen utensils, candy, and office supplies. And it goes without saying that lighting a candle or two will cozy up any space immediately, but if you’re burning something that’s a true scent of the season it will make people feel at home!
5. Shop For Next Year
Most of the decor I have because I jumped on end-of-season sales in years past. Tj Maxx and all affiliated companies are great for finding discount decor and so is Michael’s! So pop to the shop the day after a major holiday to pick up holiday items or just browse around for general seasonal items around the beginning of a new season. And you’ll probably forget about your purchase once you tuck it away, so it’s sort of like a present to future you!
