As you may have seen on my Instagram, I was recently diagnosed with lipedema, a condition characterized by the abnormal buildup of fat cells in the legs, hips, arms, and torso. The main symptoms are heaviness, swelling, pain and tenderness, and bruising very easily. You can learn more about lipedema here!

Managing the symptoms of Lipedema often involves a multifaceted approach that includes lifestyle changes and targeted exercises. In recent years, “mini trampolines,” like the bellicon rebounder, have risen in popularity with the lipedema community. Rebounders offer a low-impact and fun way to move your body and improve your overall wellbeing. I’m excited to share my experience with bellicon with you!

Understanding the bellicon rebounder:

The bellicon rebounder is not your typical mini trampoline. With its bungee cord suspension system, it provides a gentle, joint-friendly bounce that is kind to your knees and ankles. Why I love bellicon rebounder:

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the rebounder arrived completely assembled and ready to be used! I chose a model with foldable legs, so it’s easier to store when not in use. I was worried that the foldable aspect of the legs would feel unstable, but I feel completely safe that the legs are locked into place. It was so fun to customize my rebounder and I chose rainbow because I want my time on the rebounder to be happy, exciting, and SAFE! The weight limit is 441 lbs which made me (a 250 lb person) feel confident to hop on.

I started out slowly, only bouncing for a few minutes at a time. But over a few weeks, I built up some endurance and I can bounce for nearly 10 minutes! This form of movement has been so easy to incorporate into my daily life and I love that it’s helping me manage my lipedema symptoms.

The training platform is also so user-friendly and has options for classes that focus on lymphatic flow. I appreciate that there is a variety of lengths of classes too. Sometimes I only have 15 minutes and the videos on the training platform make every second count.

If something doesn’t come in your size, message the seller! Many of these small businesses are flexible in creating one-offs in certain sizes.

Target

Costumes, graphic tees, and matching Halloween pajamas for the whole family! Target does Halloween really well and offers plus sizes up to 4X in women’s sizing and 5X in men’s sizing.

Unique Vintage

Vintage vibes with a femenine twist! Unique Vintage has a huge selection of Fall and Halloween clothes and accessories up to size 5X, but remember to consult the sizing chart before your order, it varies item-to-item.

Hot Topic

Hot Topic is the PLACE for plus size Halloween and goth vibes! HT has tons of plus size costumes and cute Halloween pieces you can wear in your everyday wardrobe! Def the place to stop to prepare for #FatWitchFall

Walmart

Walmart has plus size costumes but what’s really shining this season is their Fall clothing! Walmart provides high-fashion pieces at a fraction of the price of other retailers, without sacrificing style.

Have you thought about exploring hiking but felt afraid it might be too challenging or new? For a long time I felt like hiking was not for me because of my body size and fitness level, but in the last few years I got out of my comfort zone and learned so much about hiking. After facing several challenging hikes and trying different gear, I’m giving you the complete list of plus size hiking gear you need before you hit the trails.

You’re going to read about plus size hiking backpacks, wide width hiking shoes, hiking poles and other hiking accommodations, and more.

After reading about these plus size hiking essentials, you’ll be ready to hit the trails with confidence.

This post is all about plus size hiking essentials. 

1. Plus Size Hiking Pants or Shorts

Pants or shorts? Both. Weather and terrain are two main factors in what kind of bottoms to wear. If you’re hiking in the heat, shorts are totally an option! But if you’re going to be in a tick-heavy area or somewhere with a lot of brush, pants or leggings will protect you the best.

For warmer hikes, I like to wear my Superfit Hero bike shorts, which are available up to size 7X. My fave plus size hiking leggings are from Athelta, but Alder Apparel also makes a great pair of hiking pants up to a size 6X. Alder Apparel makes hiking shorts as well, but I find they are too short to prevent chub rub, so not the best hiking choice! 2. Wide Width Hiking Boots

Footwear is essential! If you’re hiking on gravel or paved trails, you can get by with a good pair of walking shoes. But if you are going through dirt or rocky trails, it’s a good idea to invest in a pair of solid hiking boots. If you can get fitted for boots in person that’s a great option, but not always easy to do. If you’re shopping online, make sure you have extra room in the toe box for when you are hiking downhill. This could mean sizing up 1/2 a size or more depending on the boot.

The women’s wide width hiking boots I recommend are these boots from Merrell. They have great arch and ankle support and are waterproof too, which is great for muddy days. As someone who trips a lot, these boots have saved my ankles more than once.

3. Hydration Bladder

Stopping every ten minutes to dig out your water bottle and gulp it down becomes annoying. My partner introduced me to hydration packs, which are basically bags of water that you wear in your backpack and can drink from while you are hiking. They have a little hose and mouthpiece that attach to your backpack strap.

Having water so easily accessible is important during hot and/or long hikes because you have to stay hydrated! I use this backpack from Cotopaxi but you can find smaller hydration packs and even fanny packs, whatever fits your style.

4. Hiking Poles

There’s a whole chapter about accommodations in my ebook Weightless: How to Lose the Guilt and Heal Your Relationship with Movement, and hiking poles is #1 on my list! Not only do they help with lower back pain, hiking poles also provide stability, especially going downhill.

I use these hiking poles from Amazon! They come in several different colors and are adjustable for height. Plus they’re less than $40!

5. Plus Size Hiking Jacket

No matter where you live, a plus size hiking jacket is a must! You want to find something that is lightweight but warm and easy to layer.

My favorite pullover is this L.L. Bean high-pile pullover which is available up to 3X. For a warmer option, Alder Apparel has a super cozy fleece that’s available in sizes up to 6X that can be worn open or closed, has a ton of generous pockets, comes in several colors, and is cute to boot! 6. Plus Size Hiking Backpack

You don’t *need* a plus size specific hiking backpack, but if you plan to do long day hikes, pack a huge picnic, or hike to camp, it’s worth the investment. And it will save your back! If you’re a smaller plus size person, I love my Cotopaxi backpack with hydration bladder pocket because it is super lightweight and has tons of room.

Gregory is the only place to find plus size hiking backpacks, and their smallest pack is only $90. AND it has a pocket for your hydration bladder!

Bonus: PStyle

Yes, there will come a time where you have to pee in the woods. Traditionally, one would pull down their pants, grab onto a nearby tree, and squat. But that’s not easy for everyone and I have had nightmares about falling into my own pee. So if you are willing to put in the practice, the Pstyle is a standing pee device that you can use anywhere and you don’t have to show your butt OR squat. I haven’t tried this yet but the online plus size hiking community loves it.

3. Wildfang

If you’re looking for androgynous suits for wedding events, Wildfang ships quickly and their suits are ready to go. Wildfang offers suits in sizes XS-XXL and is always adding more suiting options in fun patterns, colors, and textures. Recently, my close friend, who is masucline-of-center, was having trouble finding an outfit for an upcoming wedding and I recommended Wildfang. She ordered a suit and it worked out perfectly! Pieces run from $78-$188.

Bindle & Keep is a queer suit company that you’ll see all over Instagram, especially in queer wedding photos. Their custom suits start at $895. This company is based in Brooklyn but they offer virtual fittings too.

5. Peau De Loup

This Canada-based brand offers simple dapper jackets and vests in sizes 2-20.

6. Duchess Clothier

If you’re in the Portland, OR area and looking for a custom suit, Duchess Clothier is a great choice. Their basic custom suit starts at $1,625, but they also offer individual custom pieces, including shoes and boots. Virtual fittings are also available.

7.Sharpe Suiting

If you’re looking for androgynous fashion for formal occasions, a bespoke suit from Sharpe Suiting is a fantastic option. They have physical locations in L.A., Chicago, Charlotte NC, Houston TX, and Tampa FL. A 2-piece custom suit starts at $1,550.

You’ve lost interest in cardio

If you’re bored of the monotomy of cardio workouts, you need something to engage your brain, not just your body. Strength training for plus size babes is great because it requires A LOT of concentration and thought. You have to be aware of your body, how you’re engaging your muscles, and keeping good form.

People in ALL sizes have challenges with balance and mobility, at some point. Being plus size doesn’t mean you are doomed to be klutzy forever. Balance is something you can work on! There are muscles in your body (mostly in your core) that are in charge of stability and balance. After 2 months of strength training, I couldn’t believe how my balance improved. 

Mobility can be baked into a lot of movement, but overall weight training helps strengthen the muscles that help us with our every activities. Lifting, bending, carrying…these are all things we do, every day. Plus size weight training helps us strengthen these everyday muscles and makes these movements easier.

Most workouts are super triggering for you

It is really hard to escape the toxic fitness culture at most gyms and classes. Even walking on a treadmill can trigger negative body thoughts or creeping weight loss desires. Thanks for nothing, inaccurate treadmill calorie counter!! But you deserve a movement space that focuses on the right things: trying your best and listening to your body, improvements that aren’t weight loss. 

Plus size weight training is one of my fave recommended workouts for plus size beginners because we are already good at it! Our muscles HAVE to be stronger because we are heavier. So many fat folks are naturally stronger in some areas. Weight training is also super individual and you’re only competing against yourself. The best part? No calories to count or time requirements.

You want to feel badass & confident

I promise NOTHING will make you feel more badass than lifting a barbell over your head. Feeling my streng. When I strength train, I’m more confident in bed! I’m more confident when faced with new athletic activities. And I love to post selfies and videos of lifting because it is, as I said, badass. Your inner badass is waiting to be freed!

How to start strength training for plus size babes

My biggest recommendation for anyone starting weight training for the first time is to hire a trainer. I promise personal trainers are not just for athletes and celebrities! 

Working with a certified trainer (hopefully a body posi one!) is the key to making sure you are moving your body safely and in good form. If you don’t nail down the basics, you can end up injuring yourself or causing other problems. Booking 1-2 sessions is a great way to receive one-on-one attention and make sure you’re doing everything correctly.

Once you know the basics, you have so many options! You can continue working with a personal trainer or join a lifting class. Most gyms have weight machines which are beginner-friendly. You can also try something strength related like kettlebell or pilates.
