2019 is offish the year that I, Maggie McGill, am embracing my masculinity. I got my first binder earlier this year and that opened the door for fashion that I had been shying away from for years. I’ve pretty much got masc casual down but I didn’t feel confident enough to rock masc professional looks. After a cheeky Old Navy order for work slacks, everything changed and I was inspired to wear my first ever suit and tie look to a summer wedding. The only problem was that there were NO guides to plus size masc style anywhere online. Until now.
One of my Instagram followers recently asked me how to feel confident in masculine clothing and I think the key is to find your own personal masc style. For me the piece that inspired this outfit was a white button up with embroidered succulents from Old Navy. My style is a little bit kitschy and flashy so I just had to snag some amazing shoes to complete the outfit. They definitely were the most complimented thing about this outfit so a big thank you to Insectashoes for gifting them to me!
How to Find Your Personal Masc Style
Find your masc style icon and figure out which elements of their style you want to incorporate into your own style. For me, I love Jeff Goldblum and I’m always looking for loud button-up shirts. Elements could include: prints, silhouettes, color palettes and accessories.
A supportive community is also important when you’re trying out masc looks for the first time. I had my online community cheering me on as well as my best friends who attended the wedding with me. One of my friends who has an androgynous style loaned me a tie and tie bar, which gave my look a bit of polish. This wave of support drowned the few voices around me that questioned my choices and I’ll tell you, I’ve never danced more than in this outfit. I’ve never felt so confident in formal wear than in this outfit. And I hope I can inspire you to take the chance and try masc styles for your next event!
